CMS Announces Nearly 400 New Diagnosis Codes
CMS announced 395 new ICD-10-CM codes, set to take effect on Oct. 1, 2023. The new codes must be used for discharges occurring from Oct. 1, 2023, through Sept, 30, 2024 and for patient encounters occurring from Oct. 1, 2023, through Sept. 30, 2024.
Of the nearly 400 new codes, about 125 are for accidents or injury, along with 30 recently introduced diagnoses codes regarding social determinants of health (SDOH). Staying up-to-date on these codes goes a long way toward helping providers enhance patient well-being.
While practices can access all 395 codes here, below are some key updates that members should be aware of:
- New codes for metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance: E88810, E88811, E88818, E88819
- Parkinson’s disease now has specificity for dyskinesia and fluctuations: G20A1, G20A2, G20B1, G20B2, G20C
- Chronic migraine has a new specificity for with aura: G43E01, G43E09, G43E11, G43E19
- Resistant Hypertension is new: I1A0
- Osteoporosis with a fracture has many new codes: M800XXX
Having a family history of colon polyps now has ICD-10 codes, which may be useful for colon cancer screening:
- Family history of adenomatous and serrated polyps: Z83710
- Family history of hyperplastic colon polyps: Z83711
- Other family history of colon polyps: Z83718
- Family history of colon polyps, unspecified: Z83719
